Medical Play

Preparing children for hospitalization helps to lessen their anxieties and fears. One of the biggest stressors for children is the anxiety of awaiting a medical procedure or surgery. The Child Life team teaches children about surgery, medical tests and procedures before they even go into them to help make them feel prepared and know what to expect. Child Life provides simulated medical equipment, dolls, books and other teaching materials to help a child understand what may happen in a hospital.

Allowing the child to “see” medical devices, before they’re used by a doctor or nurse, reduces the stress of our young patients, and in turn, our families. Child Life Specialists also help children develop coping mechanisms by using imagery, distraction and relaxation techniques to lessen anxieties. By minimizing children’s stress, Child Life Specialists promote an optimal response to medical treatment and care.
