Neonatalogy/Perinatology Fellowship
The neonatal/perinatal medicine fellowship training program in the Division of Neonatology, Department of Pediatrics, University of California, Irvine and Miller Children’s Hospital in Long Beach is based on the following guidelines and requirements:
- Institutional requirements for fully-accredited neonatal/perinatal medicine fellowship training program as mandated by The Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME).
- The principles expressed by the Federation of Pediatric Organization (FOPO) Statement on Fellowship Training.
- The American Board of Pediatrics (ABP) guidelines for new sub-specialty training requirements.
- University of California, Irvine policies for residents/fellows appointed and paid through the University of California, Irvine, School of Medicine.
Curriculum
The core curriculum incorporates the mastery of six general competencies—medical knowledge, patient care, professionalism, interpersonal and communication skills, practice-based learning and improvement, and system based knowledge identified by the ACGME.
Rotation Schedule
Fellows will be on clinical, educational, administrative and research rotations for three years (36 month training program). Clinical rotations at Miller Children's Hospital will be limited to a maximum of 12 to 14 months during the three years of fellowship training.
Rotation breakdown:
- Research training—with an assigned research mentor—in clinical, applied and bench research for 18 months of the three years of fellowship training.
- Fellows will also train a half-day per week during theirresearch month assignment, in specialty clinics where NICU graduates receive follow-up care, such as the Stramski Children’s Developmental Center and the Pulmonary Clinic for eight months.
- Coordination of research time into three to four month blocks with options for "elective" rotations in:
— Maternal-Fetal Medicine — Genetics — Cardiology — Neonatal Neurology
- One month vacation per year
Additional training includes:
- Time dedicated solely to educational activities for the trainees one half-day per week (Wednesday afternoon)
- Weekly combined rounds with maternal-fetal medicine fellows and faculty
- Combined perinatal pathology conferences
- Maternal-fetal and neonatal morbidity and mortality conferences
- Monthly material-fetal and neonatal conferences conducted by the trainees
- Weekly case conferences
- Conferences with pediatric radiologists
- Performance improvement conferences conducted every other month
- Quarterly neonatal surgical conferences with the pediatric surgical team
- Quarterly fellows and faculty half-day conferences with the University of California at San Diego (UCSD) and Loma Linda University (LLU)
