What To Expect
Following a clinic visit, your child’s specialists may order tests or procedures. Once the tests and procedures are complete, the doctor will explain your child’s situation and recommend a specific treatment.
- Diagnostic procedures such as blood tests, x-rays, or endoscopic “scope” examinations of the stomach (gastroscopy) or large intestine (colonoscopy) are performed on most patients undergoing a complete evaluation in the gastroenterologist's office.
- To prevent discomfort to your child, most scope tests are done within the hospital, using intravenous sedation and require special preparation. Miller Children’s has an excellent Sedation/Procedure Room with a care team who will explain any special preparation that will be necessary during the procedure for your child.
- For certain tests and procedures, parents will be asked to keep a diary of their child's activity. This is a part of your child’s care plan and it will help the doctor in creating a diagnosis and treatment plan. The doctor will often use the information from the diary and compare it with the computer readings.
