What is Neurology?

The branch or study of medicine that deals with the diagnosis and medical treatment of, the nervous system and brain, including conditions such as seizures and migraines.

What causes neurological disorders in children?

The nervous system is a complex, sophisticated system that regulates and coordinates the body's basic functions and activities. The nervous system has neurons that may control movement, communication, vision, hearing or cognition.
The nervous system consists of two major areas:

  • the central nervous system (brain and spinal cord)
  • the peripheral nervous system (all other neural elements)

All neurological disorders result from damage to the nervous system. Some conditions emerge before birth and are called congenital. Other neurological problems can be caused by:

  • trauma
  • infections
  • tumors
  • disrupted blood flow
  • degeneration
  • structural defects

What are symptoms of a brain tumor?

A brain tumor is an abnormal growth of cells within the skull or the brain. Symptoms of brain tumors depend on size of the tumor and the location. Some warning signs may include headaches, seizures and behavioral changes. If there are any concerns about any symptoms your child is experiencing, it is highly advisable to see a doctor for examination.

What is the difference between a lumbar puncture and a spinal tap?

Lumbar puncture and spinal tap are interchangeable and mean the same thing.

It is very important that you ask questions about your child’s visit to Miller Children’s Neurology Center. Miller Children’s values your input as a parent and wants you to make informed decisions for your child. No question is too small or unimportant.

  • Keep your child at ease by explaining that the doctor and care team are here to help.
  • Comfort your child through the process of the visit, exam and procedures or tests.
  • When a parent understands the diagnosis and treatment plan fully, they can help ease their child’s worries and can answer their questions.
    Role play procedures that the child will be going through. Using dolls or stuffed animals will help a child understand what they will be going through and help ease anxiety.
