- Some children may need an MRI, CT scan, bone scan and/or ultrasound. These tests will be scheduled for you in the hospital's radiology department.
What happens after scoliosis surgery?
In the first year after surgery, Miller Children’s recommend three visits:
- Six weeks after surgery
- Six months after surgery
- One year after surgery
After that, annual visits are required.
When can my child return to normal physical activities after scoliosis surgery?
Your orthopedic surgeon will tell you when your child or teenager can return to normal activities. Generally, activities are progressively increased over the first year after surgery.
- For the first two weeks after surgery, patients should not go to school or work. They need sufficient time to heal and should limit the amount of activity until they are ready.
- After the operation, patients need to return to their doctor periodically for check-ups.
- For the first six months, they should not do any strenuous physical activity.
- After this time, their doctor will assess their recovery and gradually increase the amount of activity allowed.
- About 12 months after the surgery, patients should be able to engage in normal physical activities.
- After this point most patients can re-enter most competitive sports.
